Hailed by Time magazine shortly after its completion as Wright's "most beautiful job," it is also listed among Smithsonian magazine's Life List of 28 places "to visit before ...it's too late." It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. In 1991, members of the American Institute of
Architects named the house the "best all-time work of American architecture" and in 2007, it was ranked twenty-ninth on the list of America's Favorite Architecture according to the AIA.

That is not a dove at my window.
That is not a dove at my window.
It sits on the sill with the dust of many years of neglect.
The white paint of the ledge has become checked and flaked with age.
Layer upon layer of thick white paint has been stacked upon the sill,
Encrusting the grime.
The most recent coating of glossy white enamel
Brushed on several decades ago
To cover the bloodstains of a Dreamer.
Under that,
Another layer, to hide the tears of brother fighting brother
Attempting to abolish oppression.
Beneath that,
A layer, to cover the erasures in a document that declared
Independence and equality.
Deeper yet,
A layer, to hide the darkness of ships and chains
Of those stolen in bondage.
I hear the window scream.
This is unlike the bay of my childhood.
Where hot fruit pies sit to cool in the warm summer air.
The stench of that nigger word reeks from my window -
Even under the laps of white varnish sealer.
The white color is many hues and values from the pigment of my hand.
And only slightly further from that of my darkest black friend.
With coats of white, assimilation has been attempted.
Causing the window to seal shut.
I do not try to pry the window from its sill to see what is out there.
The risk of a shattered pain is far too great.
I sit there, suffocating, in the smells of oldness.
Knowing, that is not a dove at my window.

The Bayeux Tapestry is a 20 in by 230 ft long embroidered cloth—not an actual tapestry—which explains the events leading up to the Norman Conquest of England as well as the events of the invasion itself. The Tapestry is annotated in Latin. It is presently exhibited in a special museum in Bayeux, Normandy, France.
Excellent video of poet Robert Bly being interviewed by Bill Moyers in 1990. They discuss what it means to be a man in today's society - the pains of being a man and the things that can be done to heal them.
