Keith Clan Motto: Veritas vincit (Truth conquers)
Origin of name: Place name, Banffshire

When a Chatti warrior murdered the Danish General Camus at the Battle of Barrie in 1010, Malcolm II plunged his hand into Camus, drawing three bloody fingers down the warrior's shield. This warrior became known as 'Camus Slayer'.  Malcolm won Lothian in the Battle of Chathem in 1018. He let the lands of Keth to Camus the Slayer. The descendants of this warrior later adopted the name of the area.  Three lines down the chief's coat of arms commemorate the ancestor of the Keiths.  Hervey, a Norman, married a Keth heiress in 1150. He was given the lands in a charter by David I.  Despite their extensive landownership the Keiths continually invaded their neighbours, in particular the Gunns.
