A Brush with the Blues and Jazz is the second move of portraits of Blues and Jazz legends. Following the publication of his 1997 "A Brush with the Blues" collection, Coughlin revisit a few old favors like Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith and others with new water color portraits and adds giants from the Jazz world like Lester Young and Thelonious Monk. The vibrancy and energy with which he renders these portraits gives them life. Mr. Coughlin, a member of the National Academy of Design, who is represented in major collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, brings his considerable skill to a subject he clearly loves.
