2 cups sugar 1 egg, beaten 1 1/2 cups thick applesauce 2 1/2 cups flour 1 cup raisins, chopped 1 cup almonds, chopped 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon cloves 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons baking soda Cream butter and sugar. Blend in the beaten egg and the applesauce. Sift flour, measure and sift again. Dredge the raisins and the nuts with a little of the flour. Sift the flour again with the salt, spices and baking powder. Add to the buttermilk with the baking soda. Blend well. Fold in the floured raisins and the nuts. Bake in a buttered, lightly floured baking pan* about 12 x 10 inches for 1 hour in a preheated 350ºF oven. Frost with your favorite light, creamy powdered-sugar frosting.
